Defectors from North Korea revealed to the BBC how K-pop has spread even under the constraints of a totalitarian regime. Traditionally, Kim Jong Un has been seen as a unique idol, yet K-pop music is capturing the attention of the youth. They shared stories about how they became acquainted with K-pop culture and its influence on social media. Thus, K-pop has emerged as a new cultural phenomenon in North Korea. This is also leading to a reduction in Kim Jong Un's influence among the youth.
